Job Description

Nature of Work

The Nurse III – Newborn Screening (NBS) position is responsible for tracking and follow-up of all infants with abnormal NBS results. This role ensures procedures align with program guidelines and comply with national standards of care as recommended by the U.S. Secretary’s Advisory Committee on Heritable Disorders. The nurse facilitates treatment options, guides primary care providers on care algorithms for over 30 screened disorders, and supports families in adhering to treatment plans.

Key responsibilities include reviewing daily abnormal and unacceptable NBS lab results from the state laboratory, evaluating findings, and coordinating patient care with healthcare professionals, including primary care providers and specialists in endocrinology, pulmonology, hematology, immunology, and cystic fibrosis. The nurse uses the Neometrics Action Manager to address follow-up tasks and ensures timely action for critical ("panic") results, including repeat testing and referrals.

When needed, the nurse works to locate noncompliant families or those who cannot be reached and consults with physicians on next steps. Infants diagnosed with classic disorders are referred to the Children with Special Health Care Needs (CSHCN) Program for ongoing case management. All actions are documented in the case management system, including coordination with providers using external laboratories.

The nurse regularly consults with specialists (e.g., geneticists, endocrinologists, hematologists, pulmonologists, immunologists) to develop care plans and coordinates the ordering of metabolic formulas when appropriate. They also conduct research to stay current with NBS developments and educate families and the community about the importance of screening and adherence to care.

The role includes participation in monthly meetings with the Office of Maternal, Child and Family Health (OMCFH), NBS staff, and state lab representatives. Additionally, the nurse serves on the NBS Advisory Committee, which meets biannually to review screening protocols, identify areas for improvement, and make program recommendations. Attendance at state and national meetings related to NBS case management is required.

The nurse also assists the Nurse Supervisor in training hospital staff on proper blood spot collection to reduce unsatisfactory specimens and collaborates with the State Laboratory to improve NBS processes.
