Job Description

We are a fun-loving and driven family of 4 looking for a professional, part-time nanny excited to explore the Triangle with our kids! Our son is a kindhearted goofball who just started morning-only Montessori preschool. Our baby daughter is verrrry chill, but sharp, and she is blossoming oh so quickly. A typical day begins with precious baby-only time and household help, followed by picking up our son, helping him with lunch and nap, then play and adventures with both kids. Our goal is for them to have safe, engaging time that fosters their development into respectful humans. Please see details below as well as a bit about our family!

Application Requirements

  1. Your résumé
  2. A 4+ sentence answer to: why are you excited about this specific position? What makes you an ideal candidate?
  3. Current CPR and First Aid certifications
  4. Three professional references from your recent nanny positions with their name, email, phone number, and role/relation to you [if needed, you can submit after our first call. Please make a note to me if you are doing this]
  5. Clean background check
  6. The use of  fragrance-free laundry detergent  and self-care products (you could also purchase work-only attire and outerwear to wash at our house!)

Application Process

  1. Submit application
  2. A ~30min phone or Zoom call
  3. Confirmation of references/CPR and First Aid certifications
  4. A ~2 hour in-person interview/meet and greet with all of us
  5. Background check

Position Requirements

  • 4+ years professional nanny experience OR 4+ years experience in the childcare industry (such as pediatric nursing with parenting experience, e.g. nurse + mother)
  • Extensive childhood development knowledge / education
  • Experience caring for both a baby and toddler simultaneously

Timely and committed to schedule:

  • Sticks to our agreed-upon schedule
  • Proactive communication (avoids same-day callouts; asks in advance for time-off)

In addition:

  • Professional
  • Calm, positive demeanor with the energy/ability to keep up with a 2.5yo and  tons  of stairs; can calmly handle 2/3 year old big emotions well
  • Understands the basis of "emotion coaching" (Gottman)
  • Fragrance free laundry detergent and self-care products.  Mom is very sensitive to scents/smells, which means we require our nanny to use unscented laundry detergent (and no dryer sheets), moisturizer, sunscreen, hair products etc. Another option is to purchase work-only outfits and outerwear you can wash here!
  • Complete all household laundry and dishes
  • CPR and First-Aid certified
  • Know some baby sign language or willing to learn it quickly
  • Familiar with Montessori principles
  • Occasional travel with us

Schedule

  • 24-30 hours per week
  • 4 days per week
  • Typically 6hrs: Monday - Thursday 10am - 4pm
  • 1 date night per week , for example 5:30 - 9:30pm
  • Flexibility with date nights during basketball season (Nov-Mar)
  • The exact schedule  will  shift occasionally depending on our needs. Being flexible is key for this role; however, we’re known for being accommodating. We understand things come up for you too. We always communicate ahead of time and work with you to determine what the best option is for everyone, and we expect you to communicate ahead of time with us and schedule appointments on your day off. We try to never ask if you can stay late same-day or request last-minute changes unless there’s a critical need. We honor the schedule.
  • For example, we may need to start at 9am one day, or end at 5pm another day a different week. Or we may need to swap to Tues - Friday one week. Or we may need a few hours one weekend. All communicated ahead of time.
  • Please note:  Our current nanny (who is simply retiring) will occasionally be available to supplement shifts, which reduces some of the pressure for PTO requests or extra date nights or weekend hours! A truly wonderful benefit.

Compensation   Package

  • $26-30/hr depending on your experience and childhood-related education
  • W-2employee run through payroll company biweekly (i.e. taxes etc. are withheld and reported)

BENEFITS

  • Flex/PTO: 12hrs per quarter, accrued on the 1st of each quarter. PTO must be mutually scheduled ahead of time. This equates to 2 weeks/year (for 24hr weeks)

  • If stay the night (rare) - $50/night

We are looking for a professional nanny who is....

  • Comfortable with  a lot of stairs in and around our house
  • Comfortable lifting big jogging strollers etc.
  • Comfortable with/enjoys being outdoors

Key Expectations for the Role

In addition to the standard expectations for a professional nanny to provide a loving, nurturing, engaging, clean, and safe environment for our kids while maintaining their schedule, we’ll want you to focus on:

Creating educational opportunities / activities

  • Implement Montessori principles around the house and for activities and development, including participation in chores / cleaning
  • Engage in educational and stimulating activities around the house
  • Encourage independent play in a productive manner (not just ignoring the kids)
  • Emphasis on outdoor time - be comfortable in various temperatures to ensure our kids have a lot of time outdoors
  • Augment and build from what our son learns in preschool

Helping us maintain a clean, comfortable home

  • Clean up after self/kids
  • Complete all household laundry (wash/dry/fold/put away)
  • Help with dishes, pump parts, bottles
  • Take out trash/recycling/diaper pails

Cooking when possible

  • Help with meal prep and cooking our meal kits (delivered weekly)
  • Encourage our kids to cook with you, they have their own cooking gear!

And a few other details

  • We provide a car for you to drive
  • Communication is key! We have a detailed “handbook” that outlines specifics about the position to reduce ambiguity and ensure we’re all on the same page
  • Minimum 4 weeks’ notice requested if you need to terminate

About our Family

We’re proud to have successfully overcome the “new parent” hump! With a 2.5 year old and a 9 month old, we’re feeling very confident. That being said, we always encourage advice and look forward to what you can teach us!

Mom and Dad have known each other since high school and have been together since 2012 - this includes a 7+ year stint of running a business together…so we’ve practically been married forever. Mom is on-point and can be particular about things, yet she’s understanding, and Dad is a quintessential, friendly entrepreneur (i.e. ADHD). We balance each other. Currently, Dad is busy but flexible and Mom is working part-time from home…but we still sneak in some spontaneity ;).

Little Dude is such a joy , even through toddlerhood. He’s a good-spirited, inquisitive, active (but not hyper) guy who loves new experiences. He’s extra close with Dad, is eternally satisfied spinning wheels, pushing things around, and figuring out how things work. We love listening to his songs and stories. He loves dump trucks, race cars, airplanes, dancing and being outside. That being said, he  is still a toddler so knowing how to manage overwhelming situations is key for this role. We can’t wait to see how his personality continues to develop!

Our newest addition is amazing … and yes most parents think that about their kids. But it’s great to know it’s so true with her! She LOVES her brother and wants to be with him or watching him at all times. We can tell she’s frustrated that she can’t run around with him yet, in the cutest way. She’s extra observant and perceptive and loves a good giggle or tickle. Her favorite activities include blowing raspberries, crawling, and “climbing” all over couches.

Our parenting style is kind, fun, empathetic, understanding but with clear, respectful boundaries. We strive to validate our son’s emotions without being permissive or strict. We set boundaries and say no, but most often we find ourselves explaining situations (“We don’t touch the stove because it’s hot and can hurt” rather than “No!”). It is important to us to “emotion coach” - we try not to dismiss, label (personalities), or make fun of feelings; we aim to empathize, validate, explain, and help problem solve. It is critical that our nanny engages in this way as well.

We value Montessori principles and want to establish them more. We rarely ever engage in screen time or toys with lights/noises. We love wooden and educational toys and stimulating activities. Independent play is also important.

Our household is non-toxic, ordered, and healthy.  We are as plastic, chemical, and pesticide free as we can be (like 80%). This translates to mostly organic/whole foods (produce and proteins), mostly wooden toys, natural fabric furniture/rugs, ceramic/glass/metal/silicone kitchenware, unscented/natural household items (laundry detergent, soaps, cleaning supplies, toiletries) etc. We like to maintain an ordered, clean house but it’s not spotless. We definitely have piles… Again, Mom is particular so certain things have specific places or ways to be utilized and it’s important to be able to remember each detail. And lastly but certainly vey important: maintaining a healthy lifestyle for our kids - to us that means: healthy and organic food (low sugar), conscientious about germs, exercise and time outdoors, stimulation and education.

We hope this position is enticing to you! Let us know if you have any questions when you apply. We look forward to meeting you!
